На пиру давеча лихо

Бородой за твердь цеплялся,

С ней лишь чуточку промок.

Beard

Recently on a feast
I was playing dulcimer loudly,
But there happened a misfortune -
The beard stuck into a dulcimer.
I pulled it with a force,
I called for help whiningly,
I tore the strings like an animal,
And broke the dulcimer.
Once I went to the forest,
To gather some berries.
I wandered about it for so long,
And got into a bog,
But I wasn’t frightened at all,
I clung to the earth with my beard,
I would have drown without it,
But I only got wet a little.

I fell in love with the maid,
I admired her hourly,
I wanted to marry her,
But she mentioned once:

My hair turned grey...
But I stayed with the beard!
